  Session 1:  Jurisdictions Affecting England Genealogy Research

  Over the many centuries of English history there have been various types of jurisdictions affecting the lives of our ancestors and the records they left behind. In this presentation we will explore these categories – geographical, civil and political, land divisions and church jurisdictions. A printed handout with selected bibliography for further reading will be provided.

  
  

  Session 2:  History and Development of English Surnames

  Inherited surnames in England developed mostly during the 13^th and 14^th centuries. This presentation will review the development of surnames from the time of the Anglo-Saxons and the Norman Conquest to the modern versions of surnames we know today. We will address how surnames developed from origins such as local place names, relationships, occupations, rank or office and nicknames. A printed handout with selected bibliography for further reading on the subject is provided.

  
  

  Bio:   David Flint has been doing English genealogy research for nearly 20 years. He was born in England, where he lived until the age of ten, when his family moved to Canada, and later to the United States. He and his wife currently live in Irvine, California.

  David devotes time to genealogy research, attending lectures and seminars, teaching genealogy classes, and occasional speaking engagements. He previously served as President, Vice-President and Treasurer of the South Orange County California Genealogical Society (SOCCGS) and continues working with the society’s executive board. He is a lifetime member of SOCCGS and leads a monthly England special interest group for its members. 

  David retired after working for the County of Los Angeles, ending his career as Assistant Director of the Los Angeles County Public Library. He began his interest in genealogy at a 2002 library conference in Phoenix, Arizona where he met two British Isles research specialists from FamilySearch. He likes to say that genealogy found him because he wasn’t looking for it at the time.

   In addition to working on his family history, David maintains a specialized collection of British Isles reference books in his home library to support his research, writing and speaking. He and his wife have made trips to England to keep in touch with family and visit the country where he spent his childhood.

  Session 1:  An Introduction to Heraldry for Genealogists

  "At the outset there is a curious fact in the relationship between the two subjects [of heraldry and genealogy]. While students of Heraldry do take to Genealogy and acquire a considerable knowledge of it, those who begin as genealogists seldom if ever take any interest in Heraldry. This is most unfortunate because the two subjects are necessarily connected." (L.G. Pine, Heraldry and Genealogy, p. 145)   Discover this connection between genealogy and heraldry (coats of arms) and learn how heraldry can become "the genealogist's most colorful tool" even when it's in black and white. We will briefly review the history of heraldry from its earliest days until now, learn the various parts of a heraldic "achievement" and what clues they may hold for genealogists, discover ways to identify coats of arms, and find ways to use heraldry yourself. Finally, we will also set right two common misconceptions about heraldry.

  
  Session 2: The Heralds Visitations, an Often-Overlooked Genealogical Resource

  "No genealogist whose interests lie in sixteenth and seventeenth century England can afford to neglect visitation pedigrees. Used with discretion, they are an indispensable section of the genealogist's library." (G.D. Squibb, Visitation Pedigrees and the Genealogist, p. 25) The heralds visitations of England recorded not only who could bear certain titles of rank and coats of arms (and some who couldn't), but also family lineages. Learn about the heralds visitations, when and why they took place, their methods, the genealogical and heraldic information they may contain, and most importantly, where the published visitations, their indexes, and related records can be found.

  Presenter Bio:   David B. Appleton (B.S. History) has been researching and teaching about heraldry for over 40 years. This on-going interest has taken him all across the United States and Canada and to Europe to participate in and speak at symposia on the subject. He is an associate member of the Académie Internationale d’Héraldique /International Academy of Heraldry, and a Fellow of the American Heraldry Society, as well as a member of the Royal Heraldry Society of Canada, The Heraldry Society (England), The Heraldry Society of Scotland, the American College of Heraldry, the International Association of Amateur Heralds, and the Genealogical Speakers Guild. He regularly participates in a number of heraldry, lineage and genealogy-related on-line groups. In addition to his illustrated lectures and presentations, he has written three books and numerous articles for a variety of publications on the topic of heraldry, in addition to regularly posting to his blog since 2009, entitled "Heraldry: Musings on an esoteric topic".

  Topic:  The American Revolution- A British Perspective

  Speaker:  Colin Whitney

  Many of you have learned about the American Revolution in high school. You know the battles and the American heroes. In this talk I will cover how the British viewed this uprising against colonial rule. We will examine key figures in the British Government, the state of Britain entering the war, and how miscalculation and misunderstanding led to the defeat of the well trained British Army at the hands of colonials using unorthodox tactics. Many British Loyalist fled to Canada after the war. We will show you how to obtain those records.

  One of the main features of DNA Painter is its chromosome mapping capability. It is a chromosome browser on steroids with much more capability and additional tools to help you analyze your DNA results. This session is a workshop in which you will obtain hands on experience in the use of DNA Painter. You will need to bring your computer with you and be prepared to enter the segment information of your matches. This requires access to a website such as MyHeritage, Family Tree DNA and Gedmatch which provides that information. If you do not have a DNAPainter account, we will go through the steps necessary to sign up for a free account. As time permits, we will address  features such as ancestral trees and tools.
