Presents

Julianne DeWalt Adamik

Session 1: Starting at the Very Beginning - Genetic Genealogy for the Beginner:

Curious about using DNA for genealogy research but don’t know where to begin? Have you taken a DNA test and now wonder, “what’s next?” Then this is the workshop for you! We start at the beginning…the very beginning. Learn all about genetic genealogy, but without all the science. Okay, maybe just a little bit of science. But just enough to build your understanding of what DNA is, types of DNA, how it’s used in genealogy, how the different testing companies compare, and much more. We’ll go over common genetic genealogy terminology and basic inheritance patterns.

Session 2: Using DNA as a Supplement to Traditional Genealogy research
 :

Ok, you took a DNA test and got your results. Interesting, but just what do you do with it? This lecture and live demo will show you how to use DNA results to enhance your genealogy research and build your family tree. Learn how to contact matches and encourage them to respond. Hear about how social media can help locate DNA cousins. We will explore how to best use Ancestry.com and MyHeritage.com DNA match information and will introduce you to other third party tools, such as GEDmatch to discover those elusive ancestors!

About the speaker:

After a long career as a corporate executive, Ms. Adamik embarked on a journey to discover her roots. Using the brief hand written notes found among her father’s papers after he passed away, she set out to learn more about the ancestors whose DNA she shares. She became intrigued by the advances in DNA technology and its use in genealogy research. Ms. Adamik has attended several courses in genetic genealogy, including the Genealogy Research Institute program on Practical Genetic Genealogy.

Prior to becoming a self-professed genealogy addict, Ms. Adamik spent 45 years as a corporate human resources executive. She has a bachelor of science degree in business from San Diego State University. She is the president of the North San Diego County Genealogical Society and a member of the Genealogical Speakers Guild, the National Genealogical Society, the Illinois Genealogical Society, Peoria County Genealogical Society and the Irish Genealogical Research Society. When not spending time (often late into the night) pulling her hair out trying to find her great-grandfather’s biological father, Ms. Adamik enjoys traveling, gardening and cooking…anything to allow the bruise on her head to heal after banging it against a brick wall so many times.
